Ethereum developers released a last-minute Prysm update to ensure validators automatically produce blocks with a 200 million gas limit during the Glamsterdam upgrade’s Sepolia test.
Without the update or a manual configuration change, some validators would have continued producing blocks at Sepolia’s previous 60 million gas limit, undermining the capacity test.
The test will assess whether validators can reliably handle blocks more than three times larger before developers determine an appropriate capacity for Ethereum’s main network.
Ethereum developers pushed out a last-minute software update ahead of Tuesday's Glamsterdam test on Sepolia, fixing a setting that could otherwise have left some validators producing much smaller blocks than intended.
Glamsterdam is Ethereum's next major upgrade, and it activates first on Sepolia, a test network where developers rehearse changes using tokens with no real value. One part of Tuesday's test raises Sepolia's gas limit from about 60 million to 200 million.
Gas is the unit Ethereum uses to measure how much computing work fits into a block. A higher limit gives the network room to process more transactions and more complex activity at once, though it also asks more of the computers that run Ethereum.
Prysm, software used by Ethereum validators, released version 7.2.1 late Monday with the 200 million setting built in. Its previous release was finished before that setting was added to Sepolia's configuration, so validators running it would have stayed at 60 million unless operators changed the number by hand.

Validators on the latest version will start proposing 200 million-gas blocks automatically when Glamsterdam activates on Sepolia at 13:53:36 UTC on Oct. 6.
Blocks proposed at the old limit would have diluted the test, which is meant to show how the network copes with the larger size.
Ethereum has been raising block capacity in steps, testing how far it can go before running a validator becomes too demanding or expensive. More block space can eventually mean room for more trades, stablecoin transfers and other applications before users start competing for space and pushing fees higher.
The 200 million setting applies only to Sepolia, and Glamsterdam has not yet activated on Ethereum's main network.
Tuesday's test will show whether validators can consistently handle blocks more than three times Sepolia's previous default before developers decide how much of that capacity suits Ethereum itself.
