Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade raised Sepolia’s processing limit to nearly 200 million gas from about 60 million as developers test ways to accommodate more payments and trades.
Early test blocks used only 26% to 46% of their capacity, while a six-minute voting period produced all scheduled blocks and drew 99.97% of eligible stake toward finality.
The upgrade changes transaction processing and data-access costs, with a Hoodi test tentatively planned for Oct. 27 and no mainnet activation date set.
Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade is running on a public test network with a processing budget more than three times its previous level, as developers test changes intended to give the blockchain room for more payments and trades.
The upgrade activated Tuesday on Sepolia, where developers try software with tokens that carry no real value before introducing it to Ethereum itself.
By early Thursday, blocks were being produced with a limit near 200 million gas, up from about 60 million before the change. Gas measures the computing work needed to process transactions.
On Ethereum's live network, users compete for space when too many transactions arrive at once, pushing fees higher. A larger processing allowance could accommodate more activity before that competition intensifies.
Glamsterdam also changes how much gas particular tasks consume, so a threefold increase in the budget does not translate directly into three times as many transactions.
CoinDesk's review of over 25 consecutive test blocks found they used roughly 52 million to 92 million gas each, about 26% to 46% of their available allowance. None ran close to full, which is where the larger budget would put the most strain on the computers running the network.
During a separate six-minute voting period early Thursday, all 32 scheduled blocks were proposed and 99.97% of eligible testnet stake voted toward finality, when the network treats its transaction history as settled, according to testing group ethPandaOps' explorer.

Glamsterdam changes how Ethereum's computers divide that work. It puts the handoff between “specialists” assembling transactions and validators publishing blocks into the network's rules, giving validators more time to check the transaction calculations.
Blocks also come with a list of the accounts and stored information their transactions touch. Software can use that list to fetch data ahead of time and check unrelated transactions simultaneously, rather than working through everything one after another.
Handling more activity still puts additional demands on computers running Ethereum. The upgrade adjusts charges for creating and accessing stored data, and developers have been told to retest applications that assume particular gas costs.
