Google has launched its AI chips into low Earth orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 to test whether AI data centers can operate in space. The Project Suncatcher mission will examine how Google’s TPUs handle radiation, extreme temperatures, launch forces and cooling challenges. Google says orbital solar panels could generate up to eight times more power than Earth-based systems due to near-constant sunlight. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said space-based AI data centers could become possible within two to three years.
